Our Community

"Let brotherly love continue. Do not forget to entertain new comers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels." (Hebrews 13:1-2)

We warmly welcome you to the website of the Nativity-Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church family. The mission of our church is to proclaim the good news of salvation through The Orthodox Christian witness for the glory of our Triune God Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We hope you find this website inspiring and educational and an introduction to who we are as Orthodox Christians. We are Christians, who follow the traditions and practices of the ancient Christian Apostolic Church. Our Orthodox faith has its origins in the New Testament Church, established by Jesus Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost in 33 AD.

Our worship style is modeled after the ancient tradition of the liturgy that dates back to the early years of Christianity and that has developed over the centuries. It is a true and authentic practice characterized syncretism, a convergence of various Judeo-Christian practices that existed in the early centuries of the Christianity. It has developed over 1700 years taking elements of middle eastern, Palestinian and Jewish rites of psalmody and chant and combines them with order and practices of Roman court to synthesize into the current Orthodox liturgy that we have today. Although our parish may carry a designation of Greek Orthodox, this does not imply that one needs to be of a certain ethnic origin to join us in worship or to consider becoming an Orthodox Christian.

We worship primarily in English but maintain some elements of New Testament Greek and adhere to the traditions of the ancient Byzantine musical style.

We hope that you will come and visit us to see perhaps our unique and ancient Christian liturgy. We are located in Cohasset Massachusetts on the beautiful south shore on 811 Jerusalem Rd. Our community has been worshipping here for 45 years. Our church building is an historic structure build in the final years of the 19 th century. It is nearly 130 years old. It has been home to many faith communities over its lifetime and we continue that tradition each and every Sunday and other feast days throughout the year.

Our church could be characterized in several ways. Firstly, we are a small but vibrant community. We are like a family that warmly embraces and welcomes new comers who would just like to visit or those who are seeking the Orthodox Christian experience. We enjoy fellowship with one another as a family of God. We have many converts to our faith and we especially welcome newcomers to join us and experience God through Jesus Christ, his Gospel messages, the saints and the writings of St Paul’s Epistles. We celebrate the ancient Divine Liturgy every Sunday and follow an ecclesiastical calendar commemorating special events from the life of Christ and the saints through our holy tradition. We are a church of the Bible and hold the primacy of Holy Scripture as the main component of our Holy Tradition.

Secondly, we are apostolic meaning that our church can be traced to the original holy apostles. It like all of the Orthodox churches, exits today as a link in an unbroken chain of succession that began on the Day of Pentecost.

We live our faith not only on Sundays but throughout the week living the Christian life based Christian principles on the 10 Commandments and the Original Apostles Creed. We follow an ecclesiastical calendar of feasts and fasting periods. We believe in the saints and the church fathers who have handed down our holy tradition. We celebrate major events throughout the year such as the Birth of Jesus, the Great Lenten period and the Resurrection of our Lord at Easter. We celebrate the 12 major feast days of the year according to the cycle of feasts and the life of Christ and his mother the holy Virgin Mary. The purpose of which is to lift the faithful in spirit towards the heavenly kingdom of God each and every liturgy. Our services while in English, express the ancient form of worship which has been the tradition for nearly two millennia.

We are a church that is learning and growing in faith. We do not pursue intellectual faith but spiritual faith leading us to a higher level and closer to Christ. We always strive to instill in the faithful a mindset of Christ and we strive to be the mind, hands and the feet of Christ in order to serve others in the local community. Our mission is to acquire the Holy Spirit and to express our lives according to the fruits of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, faithfulness and self-control.

All are welcome!

We are inclusive of all cultures, traditions and peoples. We are not solely a Greek community but have a number of worshipers and members of different backgrounds and ethnicities.

We are loving community of believers who journey each Sunday towards our Lord Jesus Christ and one another through worship, fellowship, education, spiritual growth witness and service.

If you like what you hear in this introduction please come and see. Please come and join us on Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM for the ancient Divine Liturgy. We welcome you to come and pray with us that you experience something different but something profound and uplifting.
